How to Pick Your First Toy
Before setting out to purchase a prostate toy, you should use clean fingers (with trimmed fingernails!) to locate the prostate gland. Pay attention to what you can comfortably accommodate anally. Is one finger comfortable? Two? More?
This measure is important because it will determine how large of a toy you should select. Something in the range of one to two fingers wide is a great start for most.
The next thing you should consider is a toy with a wide flared base. Anal toys can get lost inside of you and can be a serious risk to your health. Many of the best prostate toys have bases with angled handles. These toys give the added benefit of perineum stimulation for an external and an internal prostate massage.
You also want to make sure you get a good quality hard or soft silicone product. Anal insertables should also be easy to clean and non-porous so we recommend silicone or metal products only.
In addition to these basics, you can opt for prostate toys that give a variety of sensations for advanced play. The three major sensations found in these novelty items are:
- Electrical stimulation (E-Stim) These products conduct electricity into the prostate causing very unique, adjustable, powerful sensations. You cannot use condoms on these toys as they prevent the electricity from working.
- Vibrating (Vibrators) Oscillating sex toy stimulation is familiar to most people. The difference between them is that vibration projects movement in all directions, oscillation goes back and forth between two directions.
- Metal prostate toys offer a variety of options. They can be heated or cooled plus the weight of the metal gives an added sensation.
The Best Lubricants for Prostate Play
When doing prostate play coconut oil and silicone lube are not only recommended, they are necessary! It is important to remember that you cannot use condoms with oil based lubes as it will break down latex. Rectums are not self lubricating so you need a lube that has viscosity, lasts a while, and has hypoallergenic qualities. You can use other lubes but you may need to reapply much more often.
Personal Lubricants
- Water based lube

- Hybrid (water/silicone) lube
- Oil Based lube
- **Extra Virgin Coconut oil
- ** = Recommended for prostate
Watch out for and do not use
- Desensitizing creams (you need to feel where the prostate is located, so numbing it is a bad idea).
- Cooking oils are bad all the way around for use in sex. Coconut oil is the only exception to this.
- Crisco or any lard can be used for fisting (still not recommended), but never use it for prostate play.

Editor's Note!
A note about gender and sexual fluidity: Nothing is usually set in black and white. Like life, gender and sexuality come in all variations (the "50 Shades of Grey" title makes a little more sense now, right?) There are many people who don't identify as the gender most often associated with their personal sexual organs. A person may also be straight, gay, or anywhere on the spectrum in between.
